For every Brome composting system that is built to measure and then installed on site, a training course is offered to ensure that those individuals that are chosen to operate the composting system are fully equipped to do so. Just last week, the Brome Compost team gave such a day’s training to the newly appointed composter operators at Stanstead College.
Stanstead College is a boarding school in Québec’s picturesque Eastern Townships region. It has a student population of approximately 265 and operates 365 days a year. With 3 meals served daily to students as well as staff, the cafeteria’s food waste can reach almost 800 kg a week. Managing those quantities can lead to significant disposal costs, which the school was looking to reduce.
A made-to-measure on-site Brome Compost composting system was the ideal solution for managing that waste, while also being both more environmentally friendly and less costly than landfill.
By having the composting system directly on the grounds of the school, transportation costs can be eliminated. In addition, rather than having to manage and dispose of waste, the cafeteria’s food scraps can become a valuable resource through the composting process: there’s a regular free supply of great compost for gardening and landscaping!
The training covered the basic elements of composting and how to easily balance those elements in a recipe so that cafeteria food scraps can be transformed into beautiful compost. When nitrogen, carbon, humidity and oxygen levels are at the right ratios, the composting process happens quite naturally and continuously within the composter’s cylinder.
The Brome team also provided a detailed walk-through of how the school’s new Brome 616 composter works and how to efficiently and safely operate it. This Brome composter rotates at slow cycles every two hours (one rotation can take a minute or two) and requires minimal oversight. Therefore, the main tasks for the operator are to weigh the organic residue material, introduce it and any needed amendments into the composter in the right proportions, and note the temperature of the material already in the composter and in the finished pile.
Of course, the Brome Compost team is always ready to provide remote support to our clients if needed.
The team can assist the operator with recipe formulation and troubleshooting and can offer some oversight of the composting process. As the composting systems are always made to the specifications of the client, we take a strong interest in every composting system we install. For more information, please see our Services page.
Congratulations to Stanstead College on your new on-site composting system! May it serve you for many many years!
