Composting pig mortality: the experience of Ferme Porcine du Boisé

Composteur rotatif BROME à la Ferme du Boisé | Rotary BROME composter at Ferme du Boisé

When Jean-François Grenier, a pig farmer in St-Léon-de-Standon, contacted Brome Compost in 2023, it was to find a simpler alternative to the multiple manipulations of mortalities on the farm, to the use of freezers, and to visits from the renderer. As a farrow-to-finish farmer with 135 sows, it was in his best interest to eliminate the need for the renderer, both for the sanitary protection of his production site and for animal health.

Improving biosecurity on production sites

In fact, the risks associated with biosecurity on production sites are among the main reasons why pig farmers contact Brome Compost.

Having shared my plan to improve the situation, a professional in my area immediately referred me to the Brome Compost team. From the very first call, I immediately noticed the professionalism of this team! I felt they were interested in my project. I felt like I was already part of the family!

Good year-round mortality management

The Brome Compost team prides itself on being able to support its customers from start to finish – from identifying their specific needs to implementing a custom-made composting system. For Mr. Grenier, the solution was a BROME 416 rotary composter, which provided good year-round management of his carcasses.

The Brome Compost experience was great from start to finish. When it came time to start up the unit, team members were on hand to make sure the unit was set up properly and that my composting experience would run smoothly! […] To this day, if I have any questions or comments, people are easy to reach and it’s easy to get answers.

Jean-François Grenier, owner Ferme Porcine du Boisé inc.

Jean-François Grenier has been operating his BROME 416 composter now since August 2023 and says he’s delighted with his acquisition.

It met my initial objectives of eliminating mortality on my farm as and when needed, and of no longer requiring the services of the renderer. […] More than that – the compost produced on the farm allows me to fertilize my fields. It brings added value to my farm’s mortality compared to before, when it left my production site.

Jean-François Grenier, owner Ferme Porcine du Boisé inc.

For the Brome Compost team, this is music to our ears.

A big thank you to Mr. Grenier for trusting our team and for sharing his experience!
